What makes a party special?
To me, what makes a party special is when folks are really there to have a good time. You can tell when folks have just there to make an appearance or do not really want to be in the house. Of course, my job is to turn frowns upside down and to get everyone out on the dance floor, but its really special when I know that folks are there to party! Oh, and of course a party is also special when Im spinnin.
Who are your heroess in the DJ world?
Man, thats a good question; Im going to have to say that I have 2 DJ heroes.
Number one would be my buddy and DJ mentor: Alex Hill from Timex Social Club. I met Alex through a mutual friend.
I was DJing at the time, but not on a grand scale. Alex had a DJ crew called The Control Crew. They promoted big events in the early 80s. Alex put me down with the crew and I became sort of a roadie, but all the time, I was soaking up the knowledge of how to do things big.
Well, after the end of The Control Crew, Alex and I stayed tight and we co-wrote Rumors together with the help of Michael Marshall.
My second DJ hero is none other than Mr. Jason Mizell a.k.a. Jam Master Jay from RUN DMC. I met JMJ on the Raising Hell Tour in 1986; actually, let me rephrase that, JMJ met me. Jason came right up to me and introduced himself. Hel, I knew who he was, but that single act of humility showed me what kind of person he was. You wanna talk about a DJ with talent! confidence and the ability to rock a crowd? JMJ was that MAN!
I learned so much watching him work. Whenever Im stuck, I think: (WWJMJD) What Would Jam Master Jay Do? Yeah, I know its corny, but it gets me by.
Whats your approach to your club sets?
I do not have an approach, I play to the crowd, and Alex taught me that. Early on I would try to arrive with a play list, but I never could stick to it, LOL. Ill see someone in the room and lock in on him or her and its like I have a kind of Vulcan Mind Meld going on. I can suddenly tell what to play next that is going to get them dancing. I call this Zoning.
Do you use Serato, Tracktor or any DJ Software for your mobile gigs?
I looked at Serato and just could not see myself using it. I remember Rev Run telling me that If I can see it, I can have it, so since I never saw myself using Serato, its not one of my tools. However, I do have MixMeister software on my R2D2 (laptop), but I prefer CDs over using that.
