You were a member of Timex Social Club, you co-wrote and sang lead on the mega hit Rumors; do you feel that dance/club music is creative right now?
All music is creative. You start wit nothin’, and end up with something. Now it’s not always good, but we can’t say it’s not creative. I like what I like. But I don’t go to clubs. I have my own parties in my car.
What’s your opinion on the whole Bay Area music scene of today?
We all we got! I’m from the old school thought of rep’ your own! It’s sad that people in positions of power don’t think this way.
Gotta support your own. It’s a sad truth, but RUMORS didn’t BREAK in my home town. A town of great stars of the past. A town that started HELLA genres of music, that stand to this day. Nope, KDAY in HOUSTON TEXAS broke the song. And like always, the bay hoped on late to a hometown hit. Ain’t shit changed!
Are you trying to reach a broader audience with the new album Soul of
the Bay?
Yes. I lost my true fans with the confusion between Timex, and Club Nouveau. Then gained a younger fan base with all the stuff I’ve done since 5 on It. So I’m trying to get my age group back in the fold again with the youth. Then I’ll have something that will last awhile.
Are you currently performing/touring with the new album?
No. but soon, so stay tuned.
How do you view yourself as an artist?
I’m a pioneer still trying to do something big for my fellow colleagues..........
Do you feel that today’s artists must evolve with the advancement of technology in order to remain on a relevant level?
Only if they want to be on the production end. All else is, and will stay the same. We (artists) really just want to perform for folks who dig our shit, and be fairly compensated for it. It’s the non-artist (producers, Managers, A&R’s, etc.) that get in the way of this.
What’s been the hardest lesson that you have had to learn in the music industry?
Like in life, it’s not about who’s best........ It’s about who works the system the hardest. Who’s in the right place at the right time. Who can play that role at that given time, and place, and can live with them selves afterwards And ain’t no love in this shit......TRUST DAT! No one is going to give you shit, even if you earned it. Got to take what’s your........ just like in the streets. I suggest you go hard on these industry fuckers from the start, so they come after you less frequently.
HOLLA
